"I simply couldn't put this book down. As time passes the horrible things that people endured during the Kosovo war seem to be unreal. This book brings the horrors to life in such a way that you can feel it. The author did an excellent job describing the characters, events and places. I formed a close and intimate bond with her main characters. I felt their pain, their sadness and their agonies. Really loved it and enjoyed it, even if it made me sob several times. That’s how good it was!"

  • Where the poppies bloom by Fatmire Gjonbalaj Marke - one of the most intense books I have ever read. Such an emotion rollercoaster reading this beautifully written book. Liridona takes us with her - beginning with a young look at life that went from an innocent point of view of the world to a world so gut wrenching & torturous. It had me at the edge of my seat for hours hoping Liridona would be strong enough to get through all of her unfortunate traumatic days.

Where the poppies bloom sometimes felt like a window into a private world where most people who have known or heard of the tragic events that happened in Kosov wouldn’t dare imagine witnessing. Although this book is fictional the events are based loosely on actual things that happened. It opened up a whole new truth of traumatic struggles people have endured. It proved to me how strong people can be in a time of despair. How strong WOMEN truly are. As Humans. As girls. As Mothers. As Albanians.

This book is a true legacy. The impact it had on me and will continue to have on others is profound. It captured me in an instant and I am often reminded of it from day to day.
  • I bought this book the first week it came out. I finally picked it up today and I couldn't put it down until I find myself at end of it. I love a book that I can live through it while I am reading it!!! Throughout the whole book I felt I was every step of the way with Liridona. All the unfortunate, evil and horrible things were done to innocent children, daughters, women and mankind period will never be forgiven nor forgotten.... BUT the rape that happened to the innocent souls who still suffer lack of support by the people who lived the massacre with them but still have pride to turn their back on them, it is unforgivable and sad. My house was few hours away from Kosova but were in Albania safe, I was very young and I remember hearing the bombings, seeing the flames and the heavy smoke in the sky. I prayed for the lives of my people and everyday wished for the war to end sooner than when it actually did. This book brought back a roll caster of emotions and memories.
  • I don’t usually write reviews but I had to for this book. There aren’t many books out set during the war in Kosovo. The author is able to convey the patriarchy that exists in Albanian culture, capture a glimpse of the suffering people went through during the war and keep me engaged through out the book. I don’t want to give too much away but there were parts of the book that literally left me shaken up. One scene in particular caught me so off guard I couldn’t stop thinking about it the next day. A character I did not expect to die did and when it happened it shocked me. The author also clearly invested in some solid editing. The words flowed and there were no obvious errors as far as I could see. I do recommend this book and hope the author considers writing a follow up sequel to it.

  • Where the Poppies Bloom is a very well written novel. I simply could not put it down for a second! Although fictional characters, the content emotionally takes you through a very real and tragic account of war. The amount of heartbreak, brutality, and human atrocities are depicted with strong conviction.

The main character, Liridona, represents heroism and courage. Early on she envisions a life filled with aspirations transcending from her lineage. She treks a journey full of pain, darkness, tragedy and deliberately committed human atrocities. Despite irreparable loss and sadness the storyline fills you with a sense of healing, survival, recovery, and renewal.
  • I wish I could give 10 stars - I couldn’t put this book down! I read the book in one night. After just one or two chapters I was so emotionally invested in Liridona and her story I needed to finish it. It took me on an emotional rollercoaster I wasn’t expecting. Some parts you will be so sad you will want to put the book down but then you want to find out what happens so you continue reading. Other times you will be so angry and asking yourself whyyyyyy? There are other emotions but I don’t want to give the book away haha Very well done!!
  • A story that will keep you turning the pages.
A story that will pull and tug at emotions from the depths of your soul and make you feel the pangs, pains and fears these fictional characters endured. Leaving you teary eyed, angry and sorrowful knowing these horrific atrocities happened to the Albanian people of Kosovë.

A grand applause to the author, Fatmire Gjonbalaj-Marke.
  • Amazing book. Finished in less than 24 hours and I’m a graduate student with loads of homework. The plot keeps you wanting more, and there is no slow part in the book. I appreciate the development of the main character, Liridona. The horrific challenges she faced changes her outlook on life. I looked forward to reading an Albanian war story from the perspective of a young woman. You would never think her character is fictitious because of how real her experiences are. It felt like I was in the story. Great book. A must read! I will be waiting for a sequel!
