Bob Davies played a significant role in the development of modern basketball. Davies was one of the first three NBA superstars. As a Rochester Royal, he played on one of only four teams in NBA history to win the playoff championship or finish or tie for first in their division or conference for five consecutive seasons. Davies is credited with introducing the behind-the-back-dribble, developing the penetration and transition styles of play, and creating several innovative passes. Named by Sports Illustrated as one of the eight most influential players in the first century of college basketball, the NBA selected him as one of the ten best players in its first quarter century. Davies was a rarity in American sports history a genuine sports hero and role model. This biography is rich in photos, archival materials and personal interviews.

"He is my Brother-In-Law! What would you say?!? Honestly, this biography is thorough and revealing. There is much that the author learned and shared that I had never heard about "Uncle Bob." For an insightful look at the life of a genuine super-star from the days before TV, this is an especially welcome book. If you have ever wondered what a true role model for every youngster would be like, you ought to read this biography. Appearing on the back of a Wheaties box when that was a distinguished and not easily earned honor, Bob wore the "Super Star" title humbly and, indeed, was the hero model for Chip Hilton, the main character of the popular boys' series written by the legendary coach Clair Bee. Every extended Davies' family has a son named "Bob." In every case, mine included, we want our son(s), Bob, to grow up to be as thoroughly competitive and gracious as Uncle Bob."

  • Barry Martin has written the definitive account of one of the greatest players in NBA history. As someone who has written a sport biography, I greatly appreciate the years of research that went into the writing of this thoughtful telling, not just of the life of Bob Davies, but of the formative years of the NBA. Martin brings the era in which Davies came of age to life. For example, when you're finished reading, you will even have a feel for the long-forgotten-Depression-era-national sport of marble playing. In addition, as someone who reads footnotes, I found it helpful that they were placed directly after each chapter.

Although Davies played the bulk of his professional career before the advent of the 24-second clock, no less an authority than Hall of Fame coach Red Holzman, who was a teammate of Davies on the 1950-51 NBA champion Rochester Royals, said in 1990 when Davies died, "He [Davies] was one of the few guys that could have been playing today. He was a great player."
  • Good Book, Read!
  • Bought this book as a gift for my father-in-law who grew up a Rochester Royals and his hero was Bob Davies. He loved the book and said he learned more about what a fine person Davies was.

  • What a fascinating account of an extraordinary man and player. Bob Davies changed the game of basketball forever and set the table for the stars from Cousy to today! Barry S. Martin's research is terrific and this book brings back memories of the early days of the NBA when small cities like Rochester were king. It is an account of the life of a remarkable man, not just a basketball player. From marbles champ to NBA MVP and All-Star. Wonderful father and husband. Just as the early baseball player Christy Mathewson forever changed the face of big league baseball, Bob Davies forever changed the slow game early days of basketball and transformed it into the fast paced "Houdini-like" entertainment that is is today. Terrific book. I learned a lot. An easy read. Well worth the cover price.
  • I'm a big history reader, and this was a great opportunity to really get a different slice of American sports history. Bob Davies is the best basketball player you've never heard of, and led an interesting life in the very early days of professional basketball, rising from poverty to a star in the NBA with a detour into WWII. Early pro basketball appears to have been a much more rough and tumble sport than today's version, and yet this gentle yet highly competitive guy was one of the best ever, including being far ahead of his time in terms of his game, which actually seems like it would have been better suited to the post 24-second clock high scoring basketball of today.

As history buff and only a casual basketball fan, I especially enjoyed the chapters on WWII and on integrating professional basketball post-war. If you're a basketball fan or have a relative who is, this really gives a taste of the early days of the sport and a sense of how monumentally things have changed in today's NBA.

And I would also note Martin has compiled a fabulous collection of photos for all parts of Davies' life. Recommended.
  • A very fun and interesting read. Before the days of multi-million dollar contracts and 24 hour sports addiction, players played for the love of the game. This book brings you back to that time through the experiences of Bob Davies. Part John Stockton, part Jason Williams, Davies was one of the top stars in his time and was recognized as a basketball virtuoso. The book does a great job of combining stats and stories about Davies and the time period in which he played. Recommended for sports buffs and history buffs too.
  • Thoroughly enjoyed this incredibly well-researched story of a true basketball and sports legend. In a world where athletes so often don't live up to standard that you would hope, the account of Bob Davies reminds us that there are many great role models from the world of sports. Bob Davies was not only a great athlete, but a man of integrity, character and faith. Well-worth the read and would recommend it for anyone interested in the history of the NBA or in a story about a great man of character.
