Think Like Your Dog and Enjoy the Rewards Dianna M Young Robert H Mottram 9780989200806 Books Reviews

  • I am a would-be dog owner in the near future, so I read this book with much attention and interest in order to become a good owner. Of course, I have read other books on dog training, but this stands alone in respect of the exact details of canine behaviors with the author's personal experiences, and how to train a dog to share your life with it benevolently. The author is very straightforward in explaining each problematic behavior of a dog resulting from insufficiently handled training or undisciplined handling of a dog; that there is no bad dog but a misunderstood owner/handler without a presence of the Pack Leader. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any dog lover.
  • I'm a little disturbed at the current "positive only" trend in dog training that rejects the idea of the human being the leader, or ever applying any kind of corrections. I am very glad that we have moved towards predominantly more positive reward based training, and I always try those methods first, but I firmly believe that throwing the baby out with the bathwater is a mistake, especially with high drive breeds. I'm talking about non violent, judiciously applied, corrections such as a quick jerk of the leash. Dogs correct each other all the time, why can't we? This trainer gets it, and teaches it. I gave it a 5 even though I'd like to see more advanced exercises to follow with your dog. If she wrote a book solely dedicated to beginning through advanced obedience exercises, and problem solving, I'd buy it in a minute. This is a good starter book, I do recommend it, especially if you are sick of the world of halites and clickers.
  • I bought the audio book.

    This is a great book.

I have had many dogs. Mostly hunting dogs. I was able to relate many insights in this book to my own experiences and mistakes over the 25 years that I have had bird-dogs in my home.

I wish I had had this information 25 years ago.

I highly recommend this book. The sooner you know this information the better. It will help you understand and bond with your dog on a level rarely found.
  • I purchased this book two years into training my pup. The easy to read and implement strategies, trade craft and mindset helped me, a new handler with a working dog, have a better relationship with my pup. Understanding the way a dog perceives his environment with structure and routine went a long way toward having a great team. I've been told this book espouses basic, 'everyone knows this' advice, well, if you're a new handler like me and no one ever shares the 'why' of how dogs perceive their environment it was an eye opener. I could have done the board and train and got a finished product so to speak, but I wanted to be involved in the training from day one; it has paid a huge return on our relationship with hard work and persistence. Jason and Dianna Young have been very accessible with follow up questions and it was much appreciated. Thank you for the great book.

  • Ironically it’s humans who are not too bright when it comes to dog training. If you could train your dog to think like a human, you’d be a millionaire! Instead if you learn how to communicate in dog language to your dog, then your dog will obey!
  • A great find for any dog owner but especially helpful for those with a new puppy. I've had many dogs over the years and managed. But, this book made the training much easier and more fun. Rather than a chore it was enjoyable for both the dog and myself.
I would recommend this book to everyone that wants to develop a solid relationship with man's best friend. It's truly worth the time and effort to have a companion to enjoy for years.
  • This is the first dog training book that held my attention and I have tried to read a lot of training books, but most of them do not hold my interest because they seem to be all over the place and confusing. Got immediate results following her advice. I highly recommend this book if you have a dog.
  • As a Professional K9 handler in an unfriendly country...I found this book to be both useful and worth sharing with my fellow handlers. Dianna explains things in a way that seem to turn on that little light bulb above your head! I read this on the airplane on my way here and used a lot of Dianna's methodology when I was introduced to my new K9 partner. She was a timid German Shepherd who truly needed me to be her leader. Now we are a great team and I enjoy working each and everyday.

Great read and even better information- for everyone from the professional to the novice dog owner.
