Killing for Keeps A Kate Daniels Mystery Kate Daniels Mysteries Mari Hannah 9780062387158 Books Reviews

  • I'm a fan of the Kate Daniels series, but felt this one just didn't measure up. The crimes were violent, but involved thugs who were doing it to each other. It was very difficult to care in the slightest if the murders were solved or not. And the idea that the police service would fly 2 detectives to Spain and put them up in a resort for 2 weeks on the off chance they might come across someone who was previously believed to be dead is ridiculous. The ending scenario re Hank was also out of the blue and unbelievable . The Jo-Kate thing - will they, won't they, will they, won't they is also getting VERY old. For 2 grownups who are supposed to be intelligent, powerful women, they are getting pretty annoying.

Another pet peeve is how all the women seem to have to be beautiful - Kate is beautiful, Jo is beautiful, Fiona is, Lisa is, and on and on and on. Why can't some of them just be ordinary? Nothing wrong with that.

Overall, I really felt like this novel was 'phoned in'. I still plan on reading the next one, and hopefully, the series will be back on track.
  • Just as in her other stories about Kate, the tale was gripping, the ‘can’t put it aside’ syndrome. I was really caught up in the story, the ‘views’ of the scenery and the banter between the players. Despite the drama between the two groups of ‘thugs’ and the horrendous murder of the brothers I could see myself in the story and just like Kate I longed to get home!
  • Good book
  • Excellent! Can't wait for the next one.
  • The story begins with a gruesome crime when a man is found murdered by being attached under a van while the van was driven. A few hours later the first mans brother is found murdered too. And so begins the hunt for a crime family - a family in feud
Kate and Hank try to track the suspected scottish brothers whom they believed murdered the first two brothers in an act of revenge.
    Very gruesome ...
KAte is exhausted and everyone believes she needs time off - but its not going to happen while these murderers are on the loose

The Next Revolution Popular Assemblies and the Promise of Direct Democracy Murray Bookchin Debbie Bookchin Blair Taylor Ursula K Le Guin 9781781685815 Books Reviews

  • Murray Bookchin was one of the most original thinkers of the twentieth century. His books influenced major political theorists like Noam Chomsky and Herbert Marcuse. Those who have followed his work will welcome this new book, which brings together new writing and seminal essays that would otherwise be scattered in libraries around the world. Readers less familiar with Bookchin's work should find this essay collection an accessible introduction to his radical but timely ideas.

The essays elaborate a new politics for direct democracy on the municipal level via forms designed to work in a globalized world. Bookchin is no blue-sky theorist. He goes into detail on the measures needed to save our planet and safeguard human freedom.

Murray Bookchin was an impassioned and inspiring writer, and his voice rings out in these pages. He’s feisty in critiquing the muddled thinking behind past failures of leftist movements for social change. He’s fiery in attacking the rapacious ethos of grow-or-die capitalism. He’s forceful in his analysis of the errors of Communism, anarchism and socialism. In expounding his own theories he's a hard-nosed rationalist. As he ventures into the uncharted waters of a new politics, he is energetic and confident despite the lack of models or paradigms.

I found the two introductions very helpful, too, in giving an overview of Bookchin's political philosophy. They are well written and lively and offer some biographical tidbits. I was particularly taken by the image of the nine-year-old Bookchin as a street agitator starting on the path that would lead him to become a respected advocate of social transformation.

These essays form a very practical guidebook for our social and ecological survival – stimulating reading for anyone concerned about the future of the species.
  • Enjoyed the book. Lots of ideas to think about for imagining a new way of organizing ourselves economically and socially. Don't have to endorse all the ideas in here, but it's great to have people thinking like Murray does in his book about how things can be done differently that would allow everyone to participate more fairly.
  • At a time when society seems to be falling apart at the seams, it behooves us to listen to the words of Murray Bookchin - to reflect deeply on the blueprint he gave us, and fight for a better political reality.
  • Some of the essays written after 2000 (when Bookchin made his break with organized anarchism) make a few good points, but aren't ideologically or practically sound. The essays from the 90s are largely consistent and make some excellent arguments in favor of direct democracy and democratic confederalism. His critique of the mistakes made by anarchists during the Spanish Civil war should be required reading for all anarchists and syndicalists. Bookchin has a unique perspective and doesn't idealize past anarchist movements like a lot of us tend to do. Some of his ideas could likely lay the groundwork for a successful libertarian society in our not-too-distant future. This book, and most of his work from the 60s to the end of the 90s, is definitely worth reading for anyone interested in libertarian solutions to social problems.
  • This is just a collection of essays by Mr. Bookchin, some of which are very repetitive. On occasion, there are some real clear and profound thoughts about capitalism or the environment, but for the most part, it's the same old dialectic this, and maximum program that. He's a good writer, there's no doubt about that though. I'm also concerned that he lacks experience in actual municipal politics, for a person advocating it as the primary governmental unit. Furthermore, he spends most of the book (or essays) fighting off other radicals. He lived in America, he should have spent more time relating his theories to people in the center who are looking for a path forward, not fighting other marxists. His arguments that any type of revolution (even peaceful/non-violent) rather than reform to the republic/federalist system were ineffective.
  • 5 stars.
  • Einstein said, "The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it." Murray Bookchin has suggestions for doing something about it, and they're outlined in this new collection of essays.

Bookchin's answer to out-of-control capitalism, ecological crisis, and financial collapse is a new politics that he calls "communalism" -- or at the practical level, "libertarian municipalism." This is not a rehash of socialism or anarchism, which Bookchin criticizes, giving multiple reasons for their failures. Bookchin, although a radical leftist, does not shy away from the need for organization in any new system of governance.

These nine essays are dense with ideas, but very readable. The Next Revolution is a welcome addition to the impressive oeuvre of Murray Bookchin.

A Finalist for the PEN/Bograd Weld Prize for Biography

Four influential women we thought we knew well—Jane Jacobs, Rachel Carson, Jane Goodall, and Alice Waters—and how they spearheaded the modern progressive movement

This is the story of four visionaries who profoundly shaped the world we live in today. Together, these women—linked not by friendship or field, but by their choice to break with convention—showed what one person speaking truth to power can do. Jane Jacobs fought for livable cities and strong communities; Rachel Carson warned us about poisoning the environment; Jane Goodall demonstrated the indelible kinship between humans and animals; and Alice Waters urged us to reconsider what and how we eat.

With a keen eye for historical detail, Andrea Barnet traces the arc of each woman’s career and explores how their work collectively changed the course of history. While they hailed from different generations, Carson, Jacobs, Goodall, and Waters found their voices in the early sixties. At a time of enormous upheaval, all four stood as bulwarks against 1950s corporate culture and its war on nature. Consummate outsiders, each prevailed against powerful and mostly male adversaries while also anticipating the disaffections of the emerging counterculture.

All told, their efforts ignited a transformative progressive movement while offering people a new way to think about the world and a more positive way of living in it.

"This is in interesting book. I kept wondering why the author chose the four that she did, and was disappointed that it wasn't addressed the preface or introduction. Readers who are already familiar with the women, and who expect to learn new and illuminating insights will be disappointed. The author's writing doesn't delve very far beneath the surface. For those of us less familiar with the four, though, it was a quick way to get an overview. Of the four, I found Jane Jacobs to be the most interesting, and her work to have been the most significant. Some readers will disagree, of course, but the benefit of reading this book is that one gets a stack of facts to buttress one's arguments. Much has been written about Goodall and Carson so the sections devoted to them are easy going. The author is repetitive in spots, and could have benefited from a sharp penciled editor. Barnet also belabors certain points, and often I found myself skipping paragraphs, thinking "OK. I get it. Enough already." She's an able writer, if not a lively one. But perhaps that's just personal preference. All told, this is a good summer read."

Visionary Women How Rachel Carson Jane Jacobs Jane Goodall and Alice Waters Changed Our World Andrea Barnet 9780062310736 Books Reviews

  • Rachel Carson, who exposed the dangers of DDT and founded the environmental movement, was a hero of mine growing up, but I didn't know much about her life. I was therefore thrilled to read
Andrea Barnet's fascinating portrait, one of four, in Visionary Women.

I don't have time to read individual biographies of all the women who changed our view of the world, so I felt I hit the jackpot with this wonderful book. It came at a time when I was in dire need of inspiration.

The women are wisely chosen. In addition to Rachel Carson, there are profiles of Jane Jacobs, who saved lower Manhattan from the developers' wrecking ball, Jane Goodall, who discovered that chimps use tools, and Chez Panisse founder Alice Waters, one of the early farm-to-table advocates. The author has a sharp eye for the telling detail and a novelist's knack for storytelling. She writes with grace and intimacy.

For me, what set the book apart was the way the author linked the women's approach to their fields. They were amateurs who threw out pre-conceived notions and stubbornly relied on their own instincts and observations. They looked for the organic relations and interdependencies and succeeded in making original contributions to the fields of environmentalism, anthropology, urban planning, and food sustainability.

The book would make an excellent choice for book clubs.

  • I look forward to some bordeaux-fueled conversations about this one when my book group gets their hands on it (and I intend to see to it that they do.) Looking at the lives of these four unassuming twentieth century paradigm shifters opens up doors that offer wonderful vistas in many directions. Come for the French restaurants and chimp-watching ( stay to take on DDT!)

Reading Barnet’s book (which in my case meant mostly listening to it) is a feast for the senses. I was often drawn into thoughts about the unexplored moments in my own life ---the chance encounters on a street corner, blurry insights that may not yet be possible to name. In these dark times such a beacon of hope shines very brightly. Thinking of all the people I'd like to give it to I read the book in a few big gulps, not realizing I had been so thirsty.
  • This profoundly original book made me so proud to be a woman! Not because I was able to pretend that I share - with Rachel Carson, Jane Jacobs, Jane Goodall and Alice Waters - their incredible doggedness, tolerance for endless work, ability to bounce back countless times after personal tragedy, continuing rejections, condescending dismissal and outright smear campaigns, because I don’t. Or, that I’m strong enough to believe in my own vision and make it manifest, no matter how many years it takes, in the only way that I know it must be - because I’m not.

However, somehow, in the way that this unstoppable mosaic of four brilliant lives is woven together, I get a little glimpse of the way we women work, the way we think, the way that we see our world. I see it that way too, and because I spend no small amount of time doubting myself, this makes me proud, happy and actually inspired. What is this way of seeing things that I’m talking about? You must read the book to find out for yourself, but it has to do with always having one foot on the ground, connecting and being connected to, and using keen observation to discover where we fit into the grand scheme of things.

These women bravely stood their ground in front of an industry hell-bent on poisoning our entire planet, the wrecking ball of “urban renewal,” potentially devastating species arrogance, and powerful tides of soulless conformity. Here we are, half a century later, realizing they were beacons, lightning a better path. Without them we would be living in a far more dangerous and damaged world.

I have to say I’ve never read a book like this before. It’s unusual in the way that it dares to trace really big, bold patterns across landscapes of glittering, finely wrought detail. But that’s what makes it so readable each woman’s story is a fascinating personal journey, laced with keenly observed emotion and fun, salacious tidbits; then there is the wild but masterful trip through the history and popular culture of the 1960s. The big ideas come sensitively, via gentle revelation, unfolding slowly with the power and purpose of a blooming flower.
  • An inspiring, very well written and constructed book. Barnet both tells the stories of each of woman featured, and finds the common ground among them. I had not focused on how much each of these visionary women were/are sensation-types, seeing the world in its details and building vision from that base And--spoiler alert--"one individual can make a difference"--and this book proves that point.

Trust Drafting for Paralegals Stephen Haas 9781594609251 Books Reviews

  • I love it, it is very easy to read, follow along with, and understand. I find Trust Drafting to be one of the more difficult subjects for me, but this simplifies things and helps me to better understand what I'm actually doing. The content isn't too bad as far as keeping my attention goes, after all it is Trust Drafting and not a fiction action book. The price is also not bad compared to some of the other books I've had to purchase for classes. Overall, I'm happy with it!
  • If you're looking for long explinations of the laws behind Trusts, forget it this isn't for you.

If you want to know the basic concepts behind the laws and examples of how to draft a Trust. Grab this book.

I've been a student at "National Paralegal College" for over a year now and have taken many classes with Professor Haas. His style of teaching makes it easy to understand the concepts of what and why we as paralegals do certain things.

Love this book and it's on my ever expanding shelf of legal books that provide all the references I need.
  • Thank you, Professor Haas! Trusts are explained clearly and I enjoy listening to your lectures, I've learned a lot from you!
  • Really good informative book. I ordered this for my trust drafting class and this was very informative and easy to read book.
  • Great introduction to this area of law for paralegals
  • Great
  • Stephen has made this book very easy to understand. This should be called Trusts for Dummies. You do not have to have legal back ground to understand. Anyone can read this and draft a trust.
  • Used this bolder class and is a great text.

  • This prep book has LOTS of different practice tests!! Unlike most study guides for the SAT, this is THE Specialized High School Admissions Test guide and has more specific practice tests that are on the actual SHSAT/SAT. It's more current than the other ones (this one is for 2019-2020) and does not just give you the answers to their problems but explains how they got the answers in a way that pretty much ANYONE can understand. My sons really struggled with math but this manual broke down the problems step by step on how to solve it. Now, they did not do well the first time that I tested them with the practice test from this manual but after seeing where they needed help, I followed the instructions in the manual and they improved GREATLY!! My suggestion is to make copies of the practice tests and to give them to the student over and over until they know how to do the problem on their own. This study guide is a must for students studying for their SAT and the SHSAT!!
  • Studying has never been easy. I need more than just practice test and answer sheets. This test book provides not just answers but full explanations of why each answer fits the question. What I like most about the test prep book is that it also provides an explanation as to why the wrong answer is not the correct choice. Having those reasons explains led to you in a simplified text provides a real in depth critical thinking analysis needed to pass the exam.
  • This prep boik for 2019 & 2020 is a great study guide. It is concise but has all the necessary information that you need. If you are having a hard time grasping concepts, then this is the book for you. My only issue is with the answer explanations I wish they were a bit more expansive.
  • I bring it everywhere with me. I try to look at it everyday and I try to memorize the information, so I’m able to say it out loud word for word. I recommend to anyone getting ready to take the test. This is the only study material I have used so far. I don’t to use too many other sources.
  • I like the information provided and very informative. I do wish it could be spaced out a little more to make it an easier read. I am ADHD so it was an actual effort to maintain focus. When I worked with family it was better for me and I retained much I more.
  • I ordered this book as extra materials to teach and study for the test. It is a great asset, well written and formatted. This is always my go to company for test prep as they are alsway on point
  • My daughter is in the 8th grade and preparing for High School. She found the book to be very helpful & easy to follow. The explanations were to the point and helped her understand the material.
  • This is an incredible book! It describes in detail almost every study scenario you will need to be familiar with. Just remember, that the actual test questions may vary but this will test prep and provide that much needed confidence and technicality when getting through the reading and exercises. A point perhaps others' miss when buying this 'guide'.
